In the proud tradition of Animal House, Vacation and…Van Wilder, National Lampoon is once again lending their name to a film with a particular brand of humor.
Frank Hopper is a former lawyer, long-term loser and constant dreamer (and frankly, probably just not all that bright). When he receives a credit card in the mail, he believes he's hit the jackpot. It's not long before he's working his way toward financing his dream - an all-woman hockey team. Never mind the fact that he's put himself in debt to the tune of more than $300,000. Naturally, he winds up in court when his plan backfires.
Starring as Frank is New Jersey rocker Jon Bon Jovi, who has a number of "hey, it's that guy!" compatriots. Estella Warren (whose agent dealt her career a serious blow when he gave her the script for Kangaroo Jack) will play a trial attorney and the love interest of Frank. Married With Children's David Faustino is Frank's best friend and business partner. If you're wondering what Faustino's been doing since his days as Bud Bundy, well, he's been in such luminous films as 12 Bucks (co-starring Ernest Borgnine!), Dirt Merchant (with the ever-lovely Julie Benz!) and Get Your Stuff (featuring no one you've ever heard of!). The Princess Bride's Cary Elwes is a smarmy district attorney who is bent on bring Frank down (probably because Warren's character is his girlfriend), and Nora Dunn is Frank's sharp-tongued sister.
The Trouble With Frank is being directed by Arthur Hiller. If his name sounds familiar, it's because he directed '70s staples like Love Story, Plaza Suite, The Out-of-Towners, Silver Streak and The In-Laws. It's his first directorial effort in about a decade (unless you count an Alan Smithee credit).
Set for a May 2004 start date, The Trouble With Frank will be filmed in North Carolina. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
